History of Romi Script

The Romi script for Konkani has a rich history dating back to the Portuguese era in Goa. Initially developed by Catholic missionaries to spread Christianity, it eventually became a vital part of Goan cultural identity.

Despite facing challenges and opposition, Romi Konkani has persevered as a written form of the language, with a growing body of literature including novels, poetry, and religious texts. Today, it continues to be an important medium for preserving and promoting Konkani culture worldwide.

Key milestones in the history of Romi Konkani:

  • 16th century: Introduction of Roman script by Portuguese missionaries
  • 19th century: Growth of Konkani literature in Romi script
